Your Guide to Safaris in Amboseli NP

Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s most photogenic and beloved wildlife destinations. Located in southern Kenya near the Tanzanian border, the park covers approximately 392 square kilometres and sits in the shadow of the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro. The park’s landscape varies from vast open savannah plains to acacia woodlands, seasonal lakes, and wetlands fed by underground streams from Kilimanjaro’s melting snows.

Why should you visit Amboseli National Park?

Amboseli offers one of Africa’s most spectacular safari settings, where wildlife roams freely against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. The park is world renowned for its large elephant herds, often considered amongst the best places in Africa to observe these gentle giants up close. The combination of diverse habitats creates perfect conditions for photography, with unobstructed views across open plains.

The park’s relatively compact size means excellent wildlife density, whilst its unique ecosystem of seasonal swamps and grasslands supports over 80 mammal species and 400 bird species. Amboseli also provides authentic cultural experiences with the local Masai communities, who have coexisted with wildlife in this region for centuries.

When is the best time to visit Amboseli?

Amboseli offers rewarding wildlife viewing throughout the year, with each season providing distinct advantages. The dry seasons, from June to October and January to March, offer the clearest views of Mount Kilimanjaro and excellent game viewing as animals congregate around the permanent water sources.

The wet seasons, from April to May and November to December, transform the landscape with lush vegetation and seasonal lakes. During these periods, migratory birds arrive in large numbers, making it exceptional for birdwatching. The rains also bring newborn animals, though some roads may become challenging and Kilimanjaro is often shrouded in clouds.

Can I see the ‘Big 5’ in Amboseli National Park?

Amboseli is home to four of the African ‘Big Five’, with rhino being the only exception as they were hunted to local extinction in the 1970s. However, the park excels particularly for elephant viewing, hosting some of Kenya’s largest elephant herds with individuals often displaying impressive tusks. These elephants are remarkably habituated to vehicles, allowing for incredible close encounters.

Lions are regularly spotted in Amboseli National Park, particularly around the acacia woodlands and open plains where they hunt zebra, wildebeest, and various antelope species. Leopard, although more elusive, can be found in the acacia groves and rocky areas. Cape buffalo are present in good numbers, often seen grazing in and around the wetland areas. The absence of rhino is also compensated by excellent sightings of cheetah on the open plains.

What is the best way to get to Amboseli?

Amboseli can be reached by road or air from Nairobi. The road journey takes approximately three to four hours via Namanga, offering scenic views of the Rift Valley and Masai settlements along the way. The route is generally good, although the final section involves some dusty roads. Road transfers are economical and provide opportunities to interact with local communities.

Flying into Amboseli takes about 45 minutes from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the park’s airstrip. Scheduled flights operate daily, whilst private charters offer flexibility in timing. Air transfers maximise time for game drives and provide spectacular aerial views of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscape. Many lodges offer transfers, allowing seamless connections with other parks like the Masai Mara or Tsavo National Park.

How long should I stay in Amboseli?

A minimum of two nights is recommended to fully appreciate Amboseli’s offerings, allowing time for multiple game drives and increasing chances of clear Kilimanjaro views. Three nights provides the ideal duration, enabling morning and afternoon game drives, relaxation time, and flexibility for weather conditions that might obscure the mountain.

Longer stays of four to five nights suit photographers and wildlife enthusiasts seeking specific animal behaviours or perfect Kilimanjaro shots. The park’s compact size means that even a two night stay can provide comprehensive game viewing, though extended stays allow for a more relaxed pace.

Is Amboseli good for photographic safaris?

Amboseli is considered one of Africa’s premier photographic destinations, offering unparalleled opportunities for iconic wildlife photography. The combination of large elephant herds against Mount Kilimanjaro’s backdrop creates some of the continent’s most recognisable images. The park’s open terrain provides excellent visibility and dramatic compositions.

The golden light during sunrise and sunset, combined with the mountain backdrop, creates perfect conditions for stunning landscape and wildlife photography. Elephants are particularly photogenic here, often approaching very close to vehicles, allowing for intimate portraits. The park’s diverse habitats, from open plains to acacia woodlands and wetlands, provide varied photographic opportunities throughout the day. Professional photographers often choose Amboseli specifically for its reliable wildlife sightings and exceptional scenic beauty.
