Your Guide to Lake Nakuru & Lake Naivasha

Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha represent two of Kenya’s most spectacular safari destinations, each offering unique wildlife experiences within the dramatic Great Rift Valley.

Lake Nakuru National Park, covers 188 square kilometres, surrounding the famous soda lake renowned for its flamingo populations and successful rhino conservation.

Lake Naivasha, is a freshwater lake covering approximately 139 square kilometres and is famous for its hippo populations and diverse aquatic birdlife.

Why should you visit Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha?

These Great Rift Valley lakes offer a completely different safari experience from traditional savannah parks, combining spectacular birdwatching with unique aquatic wildlife encounters. Lake Nakuru National Park also offers a good opportunity for spotting both black and white rhino.

What is the difference between Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha?

Lake Nakuru is a shallow alkaline soda lake enclosed within a National Park, famous for its fluctuating flamingo populations that can number in the millions during peak periods. The park features diverse habitats from the lake shore to acacia woodlands and rocky cliffs, supporting rhinos, lions, leopards, and various antelope species. The entire lake area is protected, ensuring excellent wildlife viewing and conservation success.

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake surrounded by private ranches, conservancies, and flower farms rather than being a National Park. The lake supports a large hippo population and offers boat safari experiences that are not possible at Nakuru. Nearby Hell’s Gate National Park also offers unique opportunities for walking safaris among the resident wildlife.

Can I see the ‘Big 5’ at Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha?

Lake Nakuru National Park is home to four of the Big Five, notably missing elephants due to the park’s relatively small size and fenced boundaries. The park excels for rhino viewing, hosting both black and white rhino populations as part of Kenya’s most successful rhino sanctuary. Lions are regularly spotted, particularly around the acacia woodlands, whilst leopards inhabit the rocky cliff areas and fever tree forests. Cape buffalo roam throughout the park in substantial herds.

Lake Naivasha itself doesn’t host the Big Five, being primarily a freshwater ecosystem, though nearby conservancies do support some Big Five species. However, Naivasha compensates with excellent hippo viewing during boat safaris and unique walking safari experiences with giraffes, zebras, and various antelope species on Crescent Island.

When is the best time to see flamingos at Lake Nakuru?

The lakes offer excellent wildlife viewing year round, though different seasons provide varying experiences. The dry seasons from June to October and January to March offer the best flamingo viewing at Lake Nakuru, as receding water levels concentrate the algae that flamingos feed on. Clear skies also provide better photography conditions and easier road access.

The wet seasons from April to May and November to December transform the landscape with lush vegetation and dramatic skies. Lake levels rise during these periods, which can disperse flamingo populations but creates excellent conditions for other waterbirds. Migratory bird species arrive in large numbers, making both lakes exceptional for birdwatching. The wet seasons also offer lower accommodation rates.

What is the best way to get to Lakes Nakuru and Naivasha?

Both lakes are easily accessible by road from Nairobi, making them popular for short safaris and stops on the way to other parks. Lake Naivasha is approximately 90 minutes drive northwest of Nairobi via the scenic Mai Mahiu escarpment road, offering spectacular Rift Valley views during the descent. Lake Nakuru lies about 80 kilometres further north of Lake Naivasha, roughly 2 hours drive through the highland countryside.
