This morning’s drive to Madikwe typically takes just under 2 hours. You’ll be staying at the stylish Madikwe Safari Lodge in the eastern side of the reserve, a collection of just 12 luxury tents in a forest glade by the Marico River.
Each morning and evening you will have the chance to head into the bushland in a 4×4 with an experienced guide, in search of the impressive variety of wildlife that lives in the reserve. Madikwe offers a great chance to see the ‘Big 5’ (namely lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo), as well as brown and spotted hyena, giraffe, wildebeest and numerous species of antelope. It is also one of the best places in South Africa for birding, with Meyer’s parrot, kori bustard and black breasted snake eagle often spotted.
Between activities you can relax at the camp, on your own private balcony, in the open-plan lounge or by the swimming pool and bar that overlook the forest canopy and riverine. A boma is held each evening, where you can get to know your guides and fellow guests around the campfire.
