Description
Soweto (from SOuth WEst TOwnship) came into existence in 1904 after laws were introduced to forcibly remove Black, Indian and Coloured people from Johannesburg’s city centre. Over the years it has grown into a huge city of over a million people with upmarket suburbs, quiet neighbourhoods, shopping malls, theatres, sports stadiums, cinemas and entertainment complexes, surrounded by poverty-stricken informal settlements.
During your tour you will visit some of the highlights of Soweto including Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Baragwanath taxi rank, Freedom Square and the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum. In Vilikazi Street, the only street in the world to home two Noble Peace prize winners, you will visit the former home of Nelson Mandela, now a museum and the home of Bishop Desmond Tutu. We also have time to stop at local craft brewery Ubuntu Kraal, the home of ‘Soweto Gold’, for a tour and tasting (beer purchased locally).
