Where is Makalali Game Reserve?
Makalali Private Game Reserve is part of the Greater Kruger area, situated on the far west of the National Park. It is framed by the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains and the Makhutswi River passes through the reserve. It’s within the Limpopo Province in South Africa, betweem Hoedspruit, Phalaborwa and Tzaneen.
How big is Makalali Private Game Reserve?
Makalali boasts an expanse of 26,000 hectares. It is a fenced reserve, sharing its borders with the Karongwe Game Reserve. Whilst many of Greater Kruger’s private reserves share unfenced boundaries with the national park and other conservancies, allowing wildlife to pass freely between them, in Makalali all of the animals are accounted for. They place an emphasis on conservation, monitioring the animals within the reserve and the natural resources to look after the environment.
What is the difference between Kruger National Park and the Greater Kruger?
The difference between the Greater Kruger and Kruger National Park really boils down to how the land is owned and managed. The private game reserves that make up the Greater Kruger each have their own regulations, so the experience will be different to that in the National Park.
Within Kruger National Park, self drive safaris are permitted, making it an accessible destination to see wildlife. However, whether you are self driving or on a guided safari, you must stick to marked roads. Within private reserves, you are free to go off road in search of wildlife, but you must go on game drives with an experienced guide. There are often other safari experiences on offer too, like bush walks or sleeping under the stars.
What wildlife can you see in Makalali Private Game Reserve?
This diverse habiat is home to a variety of wildlife. As well as the ‘Big 5’, lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants and rhino, you’ll also find hyena, cheetah, wild dogs and more.
The reserve has successfvully rehoused several endangered speies, so the reserve now hosts all of the game species that were previously indigenous to the area, besides roan antelope.
