The Kruger region enjoys iconic status around the world, offering some of the best wildlife experiences in Africa. The buzz of heading out on a game drive, just as the sun is rising, is really second to none. This is the Africa you always dreamt of, scenic bushland, golden sunsets and an incredible abundance of game.

What is the Difference Between Kruger National Park and the Greater Kruger?

The difference between Kruger National Park and the Greater Kruger really lies in how the areas are owned and managed. Kruger National Park is state-funded, and it is actually the oldest and largest National Park in South Africa. The Greater Kruger, on the other hand, is made up of a group of private game reserves, that collectively form a protected conservation area that borders the National Park itself. There are unfenced boundaries between them, so the wildlife passes freely, however, the safari experiences on offer differ between Kruger National Park and the Greater Kruger.

Should You Go on Safari in Kruger National Park or the Greater Kruger?

Unrestricted Versus Restricted Access

Within Kruger National Park, visitors are restricted to wildlife viewing on public roads. Within the Greater Kruger’s private reserves, however, guides are able to drive off-road. You can expect some fantastic wildlife sightings in both the National Park and the Greater Kruger, however.

Visitors to the Greater Kruger can also enjoy access to Kruger National Park, whilst access to the private reserves in the Greater Kruger is restricted to guests only. If you are staying in one of the private reserves, you will have to drive to one of Kruger National Park’s entrance gates, rather than shortcutting through the private reserve.

Self Drive Versus Safari Vehicles

In Kruger National Park, you are able to drive your own vehicle, so this is the most popular way to explore the park. Inversely, the private reserves in the Greater Kruger do not allow self drives, instead you’ll embark on guided safari drives or walking safaris.

Budget Versus Luxury Accommodation

Within Kruger National Park, there are accommodation options that cater to any budget. You’ll find basic rest camps within the park, as well as boutique safari lodges. The private game reserves within the Greater Kruger tend to offer higher end accommodation and a broader range of experiences.
