Where is Grootbos Nature Reserve located?
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is situated within South Africa’s Western Cape. It sits between the towns of Gansbaai and Hermanus, both known for their spectacular marine life, which you will get to experience during your stay at Grootbos.
It only takes around two hours by car to get to Cape Town International Airport, making Grootbos a fantastic stand-alone destination, or it can easily be combined with a visit to Cape Town. South Africa’s famous Garden Route is similarly accessible, with Grootbos just a short detour from this classic road trip route.

What wildlife can you see at Grootbos Nature Reserve?
Grootbos Nature Reserve does not offer your typical ‘Big 5’ safari. Instead, it is known for its incredible marine life. Along the coastline, and out in the Atlantic Ocean, there are some incredible species.
Although the reserve does not have South Africa’s iconic big cats, elephants or giraffes, it boasts the ‘Marine Big 5’. This consists of whales, sharks, dolphins, seals and penguins.
