Travel east from Cape Town to the seaside town of Hermanus, famous for its land-based whale watching from June to November, enjoying some stunning ocean views on the way. Later cross the high Overberg on your way to Swellendam, a historic farming town which nestles in the shadow of the Langeberg Mountains.

Day 2 to 3 – Knysna
Enjoy the freedom of the open road as you head towards the fine beaches and coastal forests of the Garden Route, with perhaps a detour to Mossel Bay or the white sands and sheltered river estuary of Wilderness on your way to Knysna. Cruise to Featherbed Nature Reserve or take the short drive to Plettenberg Bay and Storms River Mouth during your 2-night stay here.

Day 4 to 5 – Oudtshoorn
Today return to George and over the breath-taking Outeniqua Pass to Oudtshoorn, the ‘ostrich capital of the world’. Make sure to visit a local ostrich farm, mainstay of the region’s economy since the 1870s, and the impressive Cango Caves, a scenic 20-mile drive north of the town.

Day 6 – Montagu
Leave Oudtshoorn on the famous Route 62 through scorched plains, high mountain passes and fertile valleys. There are several pretty towns and villages to visit on your way to the orchards and hot springs of Montagu.

There’s time to explore the delightful Winelands region on your final leg to Cape Town. The pretty towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are well worth a visit and a great place for souvenirs of your trip.
