Holidays to Zambia

Zambia is one of the friendliest, most diverse and unspoilt countries in Africa. Whilst other countries race for luxury and add unnecessary barriers between guests and wildlife experiences, Zambia continues to break them down and embrace wildlife experiences such as walking safaris (as pioneered by Norman Carr) and Zambezi river safaris. A holiday in Zambia immerses visitors in natural Africa.

When is the best time of year to visit Zambia?

Whilst it is possible to visit Zambia at any time of the year, the best time to visit is Zambia’s dry season, between May and October. During this period temperatures are generally mild and conditions for wildlife viewing are at their best, as animals seek out water sources.

What wildlife can I expect to see on a Zambia safari?

Zambia has a great diversity in wildlife, an although rhino are restricted to certain areas, it is possible to view Africa’s Big 5.

In South Luangwa National Park, you may encounter elephants, lions, buffalo and plenty of leopards, along with a variety of antelope species such as impalas and kudus. The park is also renowned for its thriving populations of hippos and crocodiles along the Luangwa River.

The Lower Zambezi National Park offers similar sightings, with the added thrill of spotting wildlife such as African wild dogs and large herds of elephants near the Zambezi River.

Is Zambia good for birdwatching?

Zambia is excellent for birdwatching with a variety of habitats supporting around 800 resident and migratory bird species. South Luangwa National Park is known for its abundance of carmine bee-eaters and fish eagles. You may also spot the rare white-backed vulture. The Lower Zambezi National Park offers opportunities to view African jacana and Pel’s Fishing Owl. Elsewhere in Zambia you can also see the endangered wattled crane and the majestic martial eagle.

How much time do you need on safari in Zambia?

Although the ideal length of stay in Zambia depends on your interests and the experiences you wish to have, a well-rounded safari holiday typically spans 10 to 14 days.

You could begin with 4-5 days in South Luangwa National Park, including a walking safari experience. Then you could stay 3-4 days in the Lower Zambezi National Park including a cruise or canoe safari on the Zambezi River. Finally you could spend at least 2-3 days at the magnificent Victoria Falls, including taking a helicopter flight above the falls.

What language is spoken in Zambia?

Although there are more than 70 indigenous languages spoken throughout Zambia, the official language is English, and this will be spoken by safari guides and other staff.

How good are the safari guides in Zambia?

The safari guides in Zambia are highly regarded for their expertise and professionalism. Guides undergo rigorous training and certification, ensuring they possess extensive knowledge of the local wildlife, ecosystems, and conservation practices. Zambian safari guides are known for their deep understanding of animal behavior, which enhances the safari experience by providing insightful and educational commentary.

Additionally, Zambia is renowned for its walking safaris, pioneered in South Luangwa National Park by Norman Carr, where guides now excel in leading on-foot excursions. These guides are skilled at ensuring both safety and an immersive wilderness experience, often revealing smaller, fascinating aspects of the bush that might be missed on a vehicle safari.
