Day 1: Arrive in Los Angeles
Arrive in Los Angeles for the start of your big adventure. After checking into your hotel, you have the rest of the day and this evening to explore your surroundings. Tomorrow morning, you will need to rise early to meet with your guide, you will be hitting the road at 7.30 am, so get a good nights sleep.
Day 2: Los Angeles – Santa Barbara
With the Californian sun on your face, you’re off to Hollywood where you’ll find the famous sign and Walk of Fame on your whistlestop tour. It’s now time to leave the glitz and glam of LA behind you and head to the coast. First up is Santa Barbara, a gem of a coastal city with a decidedly Spanish flair and miles of pristine sandy beaches, a great introduction to the incredible Californian Coast.
Day 3: Monterey
Continue heading north where you make your way for the Big Sur and Monterey area. Spend your night under the Californian stars; the perfect way to get to know your fellow travellers!
Day 4 & 5: Yosemite National Park
Say ‘so long’ to the ocean for a couple of days and head towards the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevadas and the towering granite peaks of Yosemite National Park. You’ll have two days to hike, bike, or float through this extraordinary landscape of glacier-carved granite monoliths, spectacular waterfalls and groves of Giant Sequoias. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for bears and coyotes roaming the trails.
Day 6 & 7: San Francisco
Come fog or shine this city is always a highlight! Start with a walk across Golden Gate Bridge and a visit to Haight-Ashbury, a neighbourhood that’s oozing with hippy vibes and plenty of quirky shops and cafes. Head down to Pier 39 to see the resident sea lions in their hundreds – you’ll definitely hear them before you see them! For seafood, make your way to nearby Fisherman’s Wharf. Learn all about the prisoners who spent their lives trying to escape the city’s most famous attraction, Alcatraz Prison, with a superb audio tour included in your trip.
Day 8 & 9: Redwood National Park
As you drive along the stunning Californian Coast to Redwood National Park, you’ll be well and truly spoilt with amazing scenery around every bend. Get out and stretch those legs with a hike on the Tall Trees Grove trail and keep an eye out for elk and bear who can be spotted hiding under the canopy of the Redwoods. Redwoods are the tallest trees on earth, so be prepared to spend a lot of time looking up! As you explore more of the park you might start to recognise the canyons covered in fern and moss from Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World’…but don’t worry, the dinosaurs are long gone!
Day 10 & 11: Portland
Call it ‘City of Roses’, ‘Bridge City’ or ‘Beervana’ – Portland is simply awesome! The fact that you‘ll see the slogan ‘Keep Portland Weird’ plastered everywhere makes this city even more intriguing. A vibrant city full of quirky cafes, cool hipster folk and the best doughnut shop a person could ask for – what’s not to love? Oh, and let’s not forget about the beer! With over 30 breweries dotted across the city, you’ll never go thirsty in Portland.
Day 12: Mount Rainier National Park
Journey into the heart of the Cascade Mountains to Mount Rainier National Park. There are over 300 miles available on the park’s network of trails, with everything from easy walks through forest and meadows carpeted in wildflowers, to heart-pounding climbs up to the mountain’s glaciers. Mount Rainier, an active strato-volcano, looms in the background. Don’t worry though, it hasn’t erupted since 1854! This is the perfect introduction to the lush and vibrant landscape of Washington State.
Day 13 & 14: Olympic National Park
Get ready to roll with a blast of fresh air adventure in pristine wilderness. Olympic National Park offers a wide range of scenery to explore, including glacier carved valleys, snowy peaks, rugged coastline and ancient rainforest. An afternoon of kayaking on Lake Crescent is included. Make the most of the opportunity for a swim! After all that activity, you’ll probably want to relax with a dip in the Sol Duc Hot Springs. Soak it up!
Day 15 & 16: Seattle
Leaving the mountains of the Olympic Peninsula behind, you journey across Puget Sound aboard the ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle. The next couple of days are for you to explore this eclectic city. Why not whisk yourself more than 150 metres up the Space Needle, taking in the spectacular setting from a glass elevator? If you prefer to explore at ground level then get yourself to Pike Place Market and watch as the famous fishmongers throw fish to each other while people watch, or check out the city’s coffee culture. Tonight, rock out in the city that gave the world Hendrix and Nirvana.
Day 17: Montana
Depart the city of Seattle early and cross Washington and Idaho’s Bitterroot Range into ‘Big Sky Country’. Montana welcomes you with rugged mountain peaks and wide open spaces.
Day 18 & 19: Yellowstone National Park
After enjoying a night under a brilliant blanket of stars, you reach Yellowstone National Park for a glorious two night stay. View the iconic and explosive Old Faithful Geyser which goes off like clockwork and check out the colourful waterfalls, while exploring the world’s oldest and most famous national park. Keep your camera handy for wildlife that roams the park such as bison, bear, moose and elk.
Day 20 & 21: Grand Teton National Park – Jackson
Next up are the wonderful views and hikes that await in majestic Grand Teton National Park. With few foothills to speak of, the jagged peaks here rise like teeth from lush, flat meadows against the bright blue sky. Next you visit the truly Western town of Jackson, Wyoming. Explore pine forests, peaks and lakes or enjoy some rodeo action! Go wild with included rafting on the Snake River rapids; this is one of America’s last great untamed rivers, so it should definitely get that adrenaline pumping!
Day 22: Flaming Gorge
Say goodbye to the mountains and hello to the unique red rock scenery that marks the start of the Desert Southwest as you head for the border with Utah. You’ll soon see why the intrepid explorer John Wesley Powell gave this place the name Flaming Gorge, as you watch the sun reflecting off this unique red rock landscape. Admire an awesome sunset over Flaming Gorge and Green River, with views that are out of this world.
Day 23 & 24: Arches National Park – Moab
Known for being the USA’s natural adventure playground, Moab is next up on your itinerary. Encounter a myriad of incredible red rock formations that have been moulded by the elements and are dotted all over Arches National Park. Delicate Arch is a ‘must see’ and you’ll be truly amazed as you witness the iconic red arch against the backdrop of the bright blue western sky.
Day 25: Monument Valley
En route to Monument Valley, stop at the Moki Dugway viewpoint of for an awesome view of the road snaking down the mountainside and across the red rock desert. Next, it’s off to one of North America’s most iconic landscapes, used as the set for countless Western movies. Immerse yourself in the native culture on an optional guided jeep tour of the Navajo Reservation and backroads. Marvel at the sight of towering buttes and mesas which dominate the landscape during the day, then when the sun goes down swap campfire stories under a blanket of stars.
Day 26 & 27: Grand Canyon National Park
Strikeout across the desert in search of one of the ‘Seven Natural Wonders of the World’, the Grand Canyon. Hit the rim trails for incredible views of the canyon, hike down to Plateau Point for views of the rushing Colorado River, or check out the aptly named ‘Ooh Aah Point’ on the South Kaibab Trail. Whatever view of the Grand Canyon you go for, you’ll never forget the moment you first lay your eyes on this incredible place. This jaw-dropping landscape comes alive with colour at sunrise, so take to the sky to witness the Grand Canyon’s monumental red and gold formations from up high on an optional helicopter flight.
Day 28 & 29: Route 66 – Las Vegas
Today you travel a section of the original Route 66 and stop at the quirky town of Seligman, filled to the brim with pure Americana. Next, it’s time to put your energy levels to the test in the 24/7 party town of Las Vegas. Tour the glamorous hotels, take in a show, ride a roller coaster or go clubbing all night. You can even have a ‘sham’ wedding if you like, and marry whoever (or whatever) you like! For those with a little cash to splash, why not take an evening flight down the Las Vegas Strip? Epic!
Day 30: Las Vegas – Los Angeles
Finish your tour in style with a stroll around Hollywood and see the famous stars on the Walk of Fame. If you decide to stay on a few more days, why not head down to Venice Beach, the perfect place for some last minute relaxing in the Californian sun.
