From cruising along the Pacific Coast to navigating through iconic National Parks, a California road trip is one you’ll never forget. At Freedom Destinations, we’ve been designing tailor made self drive holidays for over 20 years and we’d love to use our expert knowledge to help plan your trip.
Why is California such a good destination for a fly drive holiday?
California is practically made for fly drive holidays. The state’s excellent road network, iconic scenic routes like Highway 1, and incredible diversity mean you can experience beaches, mountains, deserts, and colourful cities all in one trip. Distances between major attractions are very manageable, the weather is reliably good for most of the year, and there’s brilliant infrastructure with plenty of accommodation options along the way. Plus, driving gives you the freedom to discover hidden gems off the beaten track and travel at your own pace.
What can I expect from a California fly drive holiday?
Expect variety and some truly memorable drives. To the north of California you will find San Francisco, home to the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. Just beyond the city are the wine lands of Napa Valley, and the iconic Yosemite National Park. For getting out in nature you may also like to try the Sierra Nevada mountains around Lake Tahoe.
Further south in California you can explore the Pacific Highway from the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles to the surprisingly compact San Diego. Both have access to fantastic beaches such as Santa Monica, Venice, Mission and Coronado.
If the action of Hollywood and Universal Studios is too much, then head inland for a more relaxed way of life in Palm Springs, where the mountains and the desert collide to create this fashionable oasis, perfect for alfresco dining and people watching.
When is the best time for a fly drive holiday in California?
California is genuinely a year-round destination. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) offer lovely weather with fewer crowds. Summer (June-August) is peak season with the warmest temperatures, whilst winter can be ideal for skiing in the mountains. The choice really depends on what you want to do and where you’re planning to visit.
Can I drive in California with my UK driving licence?
Yes, your UK driving licence is perfectly valid in California for tourist visits. You don’t need an International Driving Permit for holidays. Just remember that you’ll be driving on the right-hand side of the road!
Can I drive from California to other states in America?
Absolutely! Many visitors combine California with Nevada (Las Vegas), Arizona (Grand Canyon), or even venture up the Pacific Highway to Oregon. Just let your Freedom Travel Consultant know your plans and they can book your car and arrange a one-way drop-off if required. Please note that cross-border trips to Mexico are not allowed by California car rental companies.
