Local Attractions

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad — One of America’s great heritage rail…

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad — One of America’s great heritage rail journeys, it runs 45 miles through the San Juan Mountains between Durango and Silverton, much of it along the Animas River gorge. The round trip takes a full day and the scenery is some of the most dramatic in Colorado. The depot is a short walk from the Strater.

Mesa Verde National Park — Around an hour’s drive west of Durango, Mesa Verde protects the most significant collection of Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings in North America. The cliff palace at Cliff Palace, accessible by guided tour, dates back to the 13th century and remains remarkably intact.

Purgatory Resort — Colorado’s most southerly ski resort sits roughly 25 miles north of Durango on US-550, offering skiing and snowboarding in winter and mountain biking and hiking trails in summer. It is a straightforward drive from the hotel and a good option for a day on the mountain without a long transfer.

The Animas River Trail — A paved multi-use trail running through downtown Durango along the Animas River, connecting the city’s neighbourhoods and offering easy access to the wider trail network. It is flat, accessible and well used by locals.

Silverton — The former silver mining town at the northern end of the narrow gauge line is worth time in its own right. The main street is largely unchanged since the 1880s, and the surrounding San Juan peaks offer serious hiking for those who want it.
