Yellowstone & Cowboy Country by Motorhome

This region of America is fantastic for a motorhome holiday, encompassing the states of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma.

Is driving a motorhome easy in this region?

Yes, this region is arguably one of the best places in America for a motorhome holiday. Predominantly, the roads are wide, well-maintained and quiet, making your driving experience relaxed and enjoyable. The scenic highways and byways navigate some stunning landscapes, and there are lots of places to pull in to soak in the views.

Can motorhomes stay in America’s National Parks?

All of the National Parks within Cowboy Country offer RV camping, although spaces and facilities can be limited, as they don’t all supply hook-ups. There are often plenty of campgrounds situated just outside of the National Parks too.

Do I need to book campgrounds in advance?

Campgrounds are plentiful across Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas and the Great Plains, designed with large vehicles in mind.

If you’d like to stay within some of the most popular National Parks, like Yellowstone or Grand Teton, booking well in advance is advised. Outside of the hotspots, however, there are plenty of campsites operating on a first-come-first-served basis, so you can be a bit more flexible.

What is the best time for a motorhome holiday?

In Cowboy Country, late spring to early autumn makes a great time for a motorhome holiday. From June to September, the weather is reliably warm, the days are long and most of the National Park gates and roads are fully open. Wildlife is often active at this time of year too.

If you’d prefer to travel at a slightly quieter time, May and October are ideal, particularly across the Dakotas and the Great Plains. However, the higher-elevation landscapes across Wyoming and Montana can sometimes get snowfall, and some of the National Park entrances may not be open.

For driving Route 66, any time between May and October is ideal. In 2026, this iconic highway is celebrating its 100th birthday, so, particularly over the summer, there will be festivals, celebrations and art and history installations across much of the route.
