Your Itinerary

Day 1 - Yangon

Arrive into Yangon, a city where British colonial architecture, mingles with stunning pagodas. Your local guide will greet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel, the rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 2 - Yangon

After breakfast explore the city with your guide including visits to the 2,000 year old Sule Pagoda, some splendid examples of colonial buildings and Kalaywa Monastery which is home to 1,000 monks. There will be time to explore Bogyoke Aung San Market (Scott Market) with its large selection of handicrafts, before lunch at a local restaurant.

Later visit the famous Shwedagon Pagoda which towers over 362 feet above the city and contains a stupa encrusted with thousands of diamonds. Enjoy a magnificent sunset at the pagoda, before dinner at the Le Planteur restaurant.

Day 3 - Mandalay

This morning fly to Mandalay, the former royal capital known for its monasteries and as a centre for traditional crafts. Sightseeing today will include Mahamuni Pagoda which houses one of the country’s most famous Buddha images, before visiting some of the workshops making goods out of materials such as marble and gold.

Continue to Kuthodaw Pagoda which is said to house the world’s largest book on account of its 729 marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist scriptures, before stopping at Shwenandaw Kyaung, a teak monastery with intricate carvings.

After lunch, enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure exploring the local shops and stalls.

Day 4 - Mandalay Region

Journey out after breakfast starting with a journey across one of the few bridges that span the mighty Ayeyarwady River towards the former capital of an independent Shan kingdom, the numerous white-and-gold stupas that adorn Sagaing Hill are an enthralling sight. Sagaing is considered to be the living centre of Buddhism in Myanmar and the hundreds of monasteries and temples reverberate with the echoes of cymbals, gongs and Pagoda bells. Continue to the former Royal Capital at Ava (Inwa), where exploration by horse-cart offers the opportunity to discover the picturesque ruins and surrounding countryside at a relaxed and more tranquil pace.

After lunch, visit the Amarapura was Myanmar’s penultimate Royal Capital and the last stop today before returning to Mandalay. Sightseeing will include the iconic U Bien’s Bridge, which spans Taungthaman Lake and is the longest teak footbridge in the world. It is often busy with locals ‘commuting’ back and forth which makes for an attractive photo opportunity.

Day 5 - River cruise to Bagan

This morning transfer to the jetty to board your boat for a day cruise up to Bagan. Watch local life pass by on the river bank as you relax and enjoy a river scene little changed in centuries. There will be a stop at a local village and lunch served onboard. This evening arrive in Bagan and transfer to your hotel to freshen up, before dining with a local family who will show you their kitchen and how the food is prepared.

Day 6 - Bagan

Today explore one of Asia’s richest archaeological sites with over 2,000 ancient temples scattered across the landscape. Begin with a visit to Phwar Saw Village, followed by Nyaung Oo market where you will be able to witness local life.

The rest of the day is dedicated to seeing some of the most important temples with your guide such as Gubyaukgyi with its excellent stucco carvings and the impressive Htilominlo and Ananda. Finish this evening at a view point watching the sun set across the temple scattered plain.

Day 7 - Inle Lake

This morning fly to Heho, gateway to Inle Lake, a region of beautiful mountain scenery and fascinating local culture. After lunch, board your private boat and venture out onto the lake. There will be an opportunity to visit Nampan Village to see the local cheroot (cigar) making and then continue to Inn Paw Khone, a village that specialises in silk weaving.

Day 8 - Inle Lake

Visit the famous ‘5 day market’ which rotates around the various towns on the lake shore where you will see tribes in their traditional costumes selling their goods.

Continue to the village of Inndein to look around some of the temples which enjoy great views across the lake, before taking a canoe ride over to a floating village. There will also be a chance to see the lake’s fishermen who have a unique way of rowing with one leg!

Day 9 - Yangon

Today fly back to Yangon where the rest of the day is at leisure to revisit some of the sights or perhaps take in some new ones.

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight home. Alternatively you may like to fly to the beach resort of Ngapali for a few nights rest and relaxation – please ask your travel consultant for more details.
