If you are travelling downstream, you will depart from Siem Reap this morning on a scenic drive to Kampong Cham, stopping for lunch on the way. Many rural communities cluster around this highway, with small shops, schools and stilted houses overlooking the surrounding rice fields.

Enjoy a welcome drink as you board the Mekong Navigator, before settling into your spacious, superbly appointed cabin. There is time to explore the facilities on board and get to know fellow guests before an indulgent Welcome Dinner in Le Marche dining room.

Note: During high water season ships may depart from Siem Reap itself and travel through Tonle Sap Lake.

This morning there is an excursion to the charming village of Opopel, with its open fronted houses and wandering Brahim cows seeking the shade of the banana trees. A visit is made to a local family and then on to a local school to join the children in their classroom. A leisurely stroll through the village offers a chance to photograph a place that time has forgotten.

After a restful lunch back on board, you will stop again at Wat Roka Kaong, a Buddhist temple complex built almost 200 years ago. You can learn about the history of the temple and the local population, before receiving a traditional water blessing in the beautiful and colourful Main Pagoda.

Arrive at Phnom Penh for a two-day visit to Cambodia’s bustling riverside capital. This morning you will learn more about the darker side of Cambodia’s history with a visit to the Choeung Ek killing fields, where thousands were murdered during the rule of the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s. Before returning to the ship, there is a visit to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, an old school used to torture opponents of the regime.

Later this afternoon there is time to explore the Central Market and other attractions that Phnom Penh has to offer.

After breakfast this morning tuk tuk drivers will collect you from the pier for an exciting tour of the city’s other attractions. First stop is the riverside Royal Palace, official residence of the King of Cambodia. In the same complex is the famous Silver Pagoda, home of Cambodia’s Emeral Buddha.

Then it is back in the tuk tuk to the open-air National Museum, home to the country’s largest collection of Khmer art, including many artefacts dug up at the Angkor Temples.

There is free time this afternoon to explore more of Phnom Penh independently or take advantage of the leisure facilities on board the Navigator, before a pre-dinner performance by a local dance troop.

Depart Phnom Penh this morning for a leisurely cruise along the Mekong towards the border with Vietnam. The scenery is very rural, with verdant rice fields, fruit plantations and occasional fishing communities along the riverbank.

Relax and enjoy great views from the salon or sundeck or take part in some of the onboard cultural activities, including local fruit dressing and an introduction to Cambodian costume.

The cross-border formalities will be conducted on board by the ship’s crew and, in the evening, enjoy cocktails and champagne before dinner hosted by your captain.

Navigate the local waterways this morning on a sampan trip to the island village of Long Khanh A. The island is known for traditional Khmer scarves, which are woven in many homes and exported over the border to Cambodia and beyond. There is a chance to look round the village and maybe meet the locals, who see very few westerners and welcome visits.

In the afternoon there is a visit to the typical delta farming village of My An Hung. You can sample fresh coconut and honey tea and enjoy a folk music and martial arts demonstration put on by enthusiastic local teenagers.
