Description

This full-day Bruny Island day tour takes you deep into the wild southern coastline of Bruny Island, one of Tasmania’s most spectacular stretches of coast. The day begins in Hobart with a 7:45am departure, followed by a scenic bus ride and a SeaLink ferry crossing to Adventure Bay. Enjoy a relaxing morning tea at Adventure Bay before the main event, a 3-hour wilderness cruise along one of Australia’s most dramatic coastlines.

Towering sea cliffs, some of the tallest in the country, rise straight from the water, and the sea beneath them can shift from glassy calm to churning within moments. Drift beneath these ancient crags and you’ll hear the strange, rhythmic sound of the ‘Breathing Rock’ before you see it, caused by the ocean forcing air through hidden chambers in the cliff face.

From here, the cruise moves into Bruny Island’s sea caves, carved out over thousands of years, before threading the narrow passage beside ‘The Monument’, the point where the Tasman Sea meets the full force of the Southern Ocean. It’s one of the wildest, most untamed stretches of coastline in Tasmania.

Wildlife sightings are a highlight of the cruise. Keep watch for pods of dolphins riding the bow wave, migrating whales, and albatross gliding on the wind. At the Friars, the boat slows to a drift past a rare seabird nesting colony and a large haul-out home to thousands of fur seals, one of the best wildlife encounters on the tour.

The custom-built vessels feature open-air, tiered seating for excellent all-round viewing, while onboard guides share their knowledge of the island’s stories, geology and ecology throughout the journey. Finish your boat tour and enjoy lunch at the Bruny Island Cruises Restaurant in Adventure Bay before your ferry crossing back to Hobart.

By the end of the day, you’ll have traded the city for hours spent exploring one of Tasmania’s wildest and most memorable coastlines.
