Description

This tour begins in Hobart, where you will be picked up for the hour’s drive to Truabunna, then boarding the 30 minute ferry to Darlington on Maria Island. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for whales and dolphins during the crossing!

Your first stop on the island will be Darlington Probation Station. This historic convict site pre-dates the more widely known Port Arthur and it is one of the best preserved in the world. From Darlington, enjoy a moderate walk to the Fossil Cliffs, reaching a striking viewpoint. Your expert guide will point out the intricate shell fossils exposed in the cliff face. Your next, mostly flat, walk takes you to the Painted Cliffs at Hopground Beach, where you will learn about the fasinating rock features. Maria Island National Park is a haven for wildlife. If you’re lucky, you’ll encounter Tasmanian devils, wombats, kangaroos and wallabies.

There are no cars on the island, so it feels like a natural paradise. Be prepared for several easy to moderate walks throughout the day (around 10 kilometres in total). Bring a packed lunch, or there will be a opportunity to buy food in the morning.
