Add a Little Outback… …to your Australian adventure!

Add a Little Outback…

There is no place on Earth like the Australian Outback. 5.6 million square kilometres of untouched, unassuming natural beauty, from the ancient gorges and tropical wetlands of Kakadu, to Uluru and Australia’s iconic Red Centre.

Despite its size, it is easy to add an Outback experience to your itinerary. The gateway to Kakadu, Litchfield and Nitmiluk National Parks, Darwin is less than 5 hours from Singapore, so a great place to start of finish your holiday. Alice Springs and Uluru are also well connected to Sydney and all major Australian cities.

    Australia’s Northern Territory
    – 500 million years in the making

It is estimated that Uluru (Ayers Rock) was formed half a billion years ago, during the creation of the Australian continent. Taller than the Shard, it also extends two kilometres underground.

Elsewhere in the Northern Territory, the landscapes are no less epic. The vivid colours of Kakadu, Litchfield and Nitmiluk National Parks must be seen to be believed.

Aboriginal people have lived in Kakadu for over 65,000 years, with their early history documented through rock art. The park is also home to a real diversity of wildlife including a third of all bird species in Australia.

    Getting around the Top End

The three main National Park’s of the Northern Territory’s tropical Top End are in easy reach from Darwin by car or campervan, with sealed roads the entire journey. Together they make a fantastic circular self drive:

    • Darwin to Kakadu National Park – 265 km, around 3 hours (to Jabiru)
    • Kakadu to Nitmiluk National Park – 305 km, around 3 hours
    • Nitmiluk to Litchfield National Park – 255 km, around 2 hours 30 minutes
    • Litchfield to Darwin – 107 km, around 1 hour 15 minutes

We recommend at least two nights in each park, to give you time to explore, and to simply absorb the magnitude and magnificence of your surroundings.

If you would prefer to let someone else do the driving, you can join a day tour to Litchfield National Park from Darwin or a longer tour to experience them all.

    Exploring the Red Centre

Iconically Australian, there is nowhere else on earth like the Red Centre. Watching the sunrise at Uluru is a life affirming experience. Climbing to the rim of Kings Canyon will get your heart racing, before you fall in love with the astonishing panoramic views across the Outback.

Australia’s Red Centre can be explored by self drive or escorted tour:

    • Alice Springs to Uluru – 468 km, around 5 hours
    • Uluru to Kings Canyon – 324 km, around 3 hours 30 minutes
    • Kings Canyon to West Macdonnell Ranges – 300 km, around 3 hours 30 minutes
    • West Macdonnell Ranges to Alice Springs – 65 km, around 1 hour

A 4×4 is required between Kings Canyon and the West Macdonnell Ranges, adding to your Outback experience. Learn more about the Northern Territory.
