All aboard for this unique stay in South Africa. Stationed on the historic Selati Bridge, above the Sabie River, a 1920s train has been beautifully restored, transforming it into a five-star hotel. Reminiscent of the early days of tourism in Kruger National Park, when trains crossed the bridge to stop overnight in the park, guests can now sleep in a beautifully modernised railway carriage, spotting wildlife as they visit the river below.
At Kruger Shalati, there are 24 Carriage Suites within the train, then seven Bridge House suites set within the gardens beside the river, all thoughtfully decorated and offering spectacular views from the large windows. Step through the traditional wooden doors of the Te Matatiki Toi Ora Arts Centre and you’ll be welcomed into the quirky, boutique Observatory Hotel. The hotel is housed within the Observatory Tower, and beyond the dramatic Gothic Revival exterior, it is incredibly inviting and colourful. Each of the 33 rooms is designed in its own individual style, with iconic William Morris prints combined playfully with pieces created by local New Zealand artists.
The Observatory Building was first opened in 1896, in what was initially Canterbury College, and then became the University of Canterbury. In 1973, the University announced it would gift the buildings to the general public as an arts centre. In the 2010 earthquakes, the Observatory Tower was damaged, then collapsing during the earthquakes the following year. The buildings were meticulously restored, with the Observatory Hotel opening in 2022 and the Arts Centre now a bustling community hub.

This elegant Kenyan manor house has some rather unusual neighbours. Located in the leafy Nairobi suburb of Langata, within a 140-acre forest reserve, the resident herd of wild giraffes roam free.
The original manor house dates back to the 1930s, boasting a stately façade and a sophisticated interior, and the Garden Manor was later added, crafted using reclaimed materials from the same era. The Great Bear Rainforest, naturally, houses a dense population of grizzly bears that can often be spotted patrolling along the water’s edge in search of salmon. Starting in April, both black and grizzly bears come out of hibernation and head to the estuary. In the Spring, you can also see the deceptively cuddly-looking newborn cubs. Tours are operated on small skiffs, allowing your to traverse the shallow parts of the estuary that bears frequent. Beginning in mid-July, you can spot pods of orcas and the iconic west coast whales.
