Halong Bay, Vietnam

If you haven’t yet discovered the ancient beauty of Vietnam, make 2020 the year you visit. Here at Freedom Destinations, we’re getting super excited for the travel year ahead and Vietnam is right at the top of our best places to go in Asia bucket list.

There are many reasons to book a 2020 Vietnam holiday. With just the right mix of obvious classics and lesser known treasures, read on to discover our favourite things to do, the best celebrations and festivals to attend and our Destination Experts’ top ways to travel in Vietnam for the coming year.

Tet Flowers in Saigon, Vietnam

1. Tet Flower Street Festival (Vietnamese New Year)

Visit Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) for the Tet Holiday (Vietnamese New Year) and admire the colourful annual flower festival of Nguyen Hue Street. From 22nd to 28th January 2020, watch this pedestrian walkway come alive with themed installations made up of LED lights, elaborate flowers and local artwork.

This is arguably the most beautiful time to visit Ho Chi Minh and the festival provides a wonderful city walk to enjoy with ample photo opportunities at every turn. Our Vietnam Destination Experts recommend staying in a centrally located hotel with rooftop city views, like Silverland Jolie Hotel.

Ho Chi Minh City is an excellent place to start your Vietnam holiday with multiple touring options available from this popular and well connected hub. Spend a few days exploring Saigon before embarking on a two week holiday around the rest of Vietnam’s favourite locations.

Sapa Hill Tribe

2. Lesser known Sapa by Train

If you are looking to do something different in Vietnam in 2020, head into the lesser known parts of the north around Sapa. Enjoy an overnight train experience into the mountains where you’ll meet tribe members of the northern region. This side of Vietnam is ideal for travellers who want to be out in nature experiencing authentic and rural Vietnam.

This area of the north is easily enjoyed alongside Ninh Binh’s stunning landscapes and an overnight cruise to stunning Halong Bay. Full of historical sightseeing and unique modes of transport, choose these unexplored parts of Vietnam in 2020, before the rest of the world catches on.

We recommend you pair this type of holiday itinerary with a beach stay after your intrepid adventures into the northern mountains. Choose from impressive Danang or quieter Lang Co with our selection of central coast resorts in Vietnam.

F1 Race

3. First ever F1 Grand Prix in Vietnam for 2020

For the first time ever, the Vietnamese city of Hanoi is getting ready for Formula 1 season with a brand new track that travels 5.6 kms along the city’s unique colonial streets. Found in the Nam Từ Liêm District, the track features one of the longest straights in the F1 circuit. Visit between 3rd and 5th April 2020 for the first ever VinFast Vietnam Grand Prix.

Pre-book your Hanoi hotel during this popular time to avoid disappointment – we love the Pan Pacific Hanoi for its location and stunning city views. If you have not visited Hanoi before, get well acquainted with the help of a local guide on our popular and excellent value for money Hanoi City Tour.

After the excitement of the F1 Grand Prix, Hanoi is an excellent starting point for a Vietnam holiday. Positioned in the north of the country, you can easily travel the length of Vietnam from this well connected city to the interesting waterways of the south. We recommend a couple of days in the city before joining an organised tour to all the main highlights you could wish to see here.

Lost Civilisation

4. Luxury Mekong River Cruise

The way you move around in Vietnam can be the making of your travel experience. With its bustling cities being well known for traffic, a timeless and more relaxing way to see the beauty of this country is from the water. A luxurious river cruise makes for a wonderfully unique Vietnam holiday, whilst combining two countries in one trip with stops in well known parts of Cambodia included too.

You’ll cruise the mighty Mekong River, a top Vietnamese attraction in its own right, passing remote communities, lush farmland and floating villages. Enjoy the comfort of an en suite air conditioned cabin with your own private balcony for river views, on board entertainment and on shore excursions. All meals are included along with afternoon tea. Plus, with a sun deck and plunge pool at your disposal, you’ll have plenty to enjoy with new found friends whilst you cruise.

Ninh Binh

5. Get off the Beaten Track in the North

Vietnam is such a perfect destination for avoiding the beaten track whilst in Asia. With lush green rice paddies and authentic Vietnamese food enjoyed with local families, one of our newest tours is ideal for second time visitors to the country or travellers who don’t want to follow the crowd.

Watch the sunrise in Ninh Binh and enjoy a village trek in Mai Chau, amongst many other unique Vietnamese experiences. Benefit from a private tour guide and vehicle making your northern Vietnam adventure even more special.

We recommend adding this 5 day experience onto our other popular Vietnam itineraries if you want to be here longer, or couple it with unique tours and excursions in nearby Asian countries like Laos and Cambodia.

6. Vespa Foodie Tour in Hanoi

Visiting Vietnam wouldn’t be complete without enjoying the buzz and colours of the millions of scooters and motorbikes the country is home to; around 36 million by 2020. Instead of just snapping photos of locals zipping around the major cities and towns, ride a Vespa on an organised foodie tour during your 2020 Vietnam holiday.

Travel through the Old Quarter and West Lake neighbourhoods of Hanoi, sampling local food on the back of a vintage Vespa. You don’t get much more Vietnamese than that! This unique evening tour is an opportunity to meet other travellers staying nearby and also take in a little live jazz music too.

The Vespa Foodie Tour is a great addition to a longer Hanoi holiday. Our Vietnam Destination Experts recommend a few days enjoying the hustle and bustle of the city before heading south to locations like Hue and Hoi An for a taste of beaches, shopping, history and sightseeing.

7. Unmissable Halong Bay by Junk Boat

How can anyone visit Vietnam without experiencing its main natural attraction, Halong Bay? Known the world over for its towering limestone cliffs resembling the arches in and out of the water of a mythical dragon, its definitely an unmissable Vietnam experience.

In 2020, our favourite way to visit Halong Bay is by traditional junk boat with a 2 day Halong Bay Explorer. Sleep floating above the emerald waters in an ensuite cabin, enjoy an exclusive visit to Trinh Nu Cave and free time to relax or go kayaking as you explore in your own way.

Whether you’re an early riser who wants to take part in Thai Chi on the top deck or are more interested in the afternoon cooking demonstration, this cruise is a must-do for your Vietnam holiday. In all our years of Vietnam travel, we’ve never found a better way to see the ‘descending dragon’ bay. Add this 2 day cruise onto your time in and around Hanoi or enjoy it as part of a longer two week holiday.
