Canada Rail Holiday 2025 & 2026
To travel through Canada by train is to witness one incredible landscape after another unfold before your eyes, spectacular panoramas that you just cannot see travelling by road.
Canada has a well established rail network, that connects Vancouver on the Pacific Coast to Halifax on the Atlantic Ocean, and stretches as far north as Churchill, on the shores of the often frozen Hudson Bay.
In many parts built to carry freight and raw materials from remote places, Canada now has some of the most scenic railway journeys in the world.
Rocky Mountaineer
Undoubtedly, Canada’s most famous train is the Rocky Mountaineer. Renowned for its spectacular vistas, viewed through luxurious glass-domed carriages, it is one of the world’s ultimate travel experiences.
From the bustling city of Vancouver, The Rocky Mountaineer impressively carves its way through the Canadian Rockies to the serenity of Jasper and Banff National Parks. There are three routes to choose from, which all run in both directions:
Service on board is luxurious, to say the least, whether you travel in a Silver Leaf or Gold Leaf carriage. In both, you’ll enjoy complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, exquisitely prepared dining and the service of expert hosts and hostesses who share their impressive knowledge of the wildlife, natural environments and historic sites that you pass.
At FREEDOM we offer both classic Rocky Mountaineer journeys and longer packages and holidays including a ride on this most famous train.
VIA Rail
Throughout Canada, VIA Rail connects over 450 destinations, providing an excellent way to explore the world’s second largest country without flying. Popular journeys include Vancouver to Prince Rupert, via Jasper National Park, and Toronto to Halifax, via Montreal and Quebec City.
For the ultimate east to west Canadian rail holiday, you can take connecting VIA trains to travel the complete 4,430 km from Nova Scotia to British Columbia. The three day section between Jasper and Toronto is by sleeper train, and a great opportunity to spot elk, deer or even black bears from your window.
VIA Rail’s economy carriages are comfortable and spacious, with free WiFi and large picture windows to soak up the view. Business class travellers can enjoy drinks and meals served to their table and access to business class lounges, at certain stations, prior to their journey.
