Your Wildlife Holiday Experience
The most important thing about any wildlife holiday is that you should be able to observe wild animals in their natural habitat without influencing their behaviour. At FREEDOM, we only work with ethical hotels and resorts as well as National Parks and reserves that are dedicated to the preservation of all wildlife and their diverse environments.
Africa Wildlife Holidays
If there is one continent that dominates wildlife holidays it is Africa. A traditional safari holiday provides exceptional wildlife viewing with the ‘Big 5’ of lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo high on the “must-see” list.
Beyond the traditional safari, there are many other incredible wildlife experiences available. On the outskirts of Nairobi in Kenya is Giraffe Manor, where ten long-necked residents roam freely amongst 140 acres of forest, then as if by clockwork, make their way across to the 5 star hotel twice a day to enjoy breakfast and afternoon tea with guests.
In South Africa you can create your own self drive wildlife holiday, incorporating into your itinerary a stay at a safari lodge, such as Rhino Ridge, overlooking the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi National Park, or any of the simple, but superbly located Kruger Rest Camps.
Alternatively, the more active may like to combine a trek with viewing gorillas in the wild. Both Rwanda and Uganda provide great opportunities to do this with professional guides.
Asia Wildlife Holidays
The tropical rainforests of Asia provide a fantastic natural environment for a wildlife holiday. Combining a traditional beach holiday with a stay at Elephant Hills in Thailand has become most popular with Freedom Destinations customers. Elephant Hills is located within Khao Sok National Park, where rescued elephants can recover and roam free in a sustainable environment.
Another icon of Asia wildlife holidays is the orangutan. This much endangered primate is under threat due to habitat destruction, but can be observed in it’s natural environment in the forests of Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre in Borneo. Nearby, on Selingan Island, you can see turtles nest on the beach, making for a great Borneo wildlife experience.
Australia Wildlife Holidays
Australia is home to some unique wildlife found nowhere else in the world. Many people are familiar with koala, kangaroo and wombat, but fewer have come face to face with a quokka!
This resident marsupial is found on Rottnest Island just off the coast of Perth in Western Australia. To get you quokka selfie you can visit on a Rottnest Island day tour or stay overnight at the beachside Discovery glamping resort.
And why not combine your visit to Rottnest Island with a self drive holiday up the coast of Western Australia to Shark Bay, to meet the wild dolphins at Monkey Mia Resort? Each morning hotel guests are invited by park rangers to stand knee deep in the Indian Ocean as curious wild dolphins cruise the shallows looking for fish. Guest numbers are strictly controlled and the dolphins choose whether they want to visit, but rarely disappoint!
Canada & America Wildlife Holidays
America’s National Parks are teaming with wildlife. Probably most famous is Yellowstone National Park where it is possible to view bison by the roadside and moose in the forests, amongst other indigenous birds and animals.
For a more exclusive experience, consider visiting Canada’s west coast for a whale and bear adventure, staying at Knight Inlet Lodge. This floating hotel offers guided tours to watch grizzly bears feeding on salmon from the safety of boats and purpose built platforms overlooking the river.
