Gary’s Tour of New Zealand’s South Island

I’ve just returned from New Zealand where I embarked on a 10 day Southern Spectacular AAT Kings escorted tour.

We started in Christchurch, taking a circular route all around New Zealand’s South Island, with stops at some incredible places including Milford Sound, Franz Josef Glacier, the Otago Peninsula and so many more.

I’m in love with New Zealand all over again and can’t wait to return.

Questions and Answers

What were the standout experiences on your tour?

I loved our visit to Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound (Piopiotahi), where we had a two hour nature cruise on board the beautiful Milford Mariner. Another included experience on the tour, and even in the rain it truly was stunning. In fact, some might say even more stunning as we got to witness the full force of the waterfalls, plus see hundreds of other temporary waterfalls that would have disappeared by the afternoon without any further rainfall.

In Te Anau we had an included excursion with Fiordland Jet along the Waiau River to Lake Manapouri. Alex, our boat captain, was such a good laugh and definitely made this a highlight experience of the whole trip! For any Lord of the Rings fans, you might recognise some of the river scenes from the films, but I’m clueless…

A highlight dinner experience on the trip began with a journey across Lake Wakatipu on the twin-screw steam ship TSS Earnslaw (the Old Lady of the Lake) to Walter Peak High Country Farm. The station is a little slice of paradise, with a great BBQ-style dinner followed by a farm show where the dog will loyally shepherd some sheep back to their enclosure.

What did you enjoy most about travelling with AAT Kings?

Our amazing Travel Director, Nathan, and our Driver, Mark, were truly outstanding across the 2,200km+ that we travelled together.

The tour also included some really unique experiences, that I wouldn’t have done travelling independently. In Lake Tekapo we had our ‘Be My Guest’ Afternoon Tea experience with Ange Taylor (the Pavlova Queen) and her husband Stan in their home on the banks of the lake. We also had a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® experience at Dunedin Craft Distillers, a local business working to reduce food waste from bakers, supermarkets and restaurants by distilling unused bakery products – from bread to cakes – into delicious craft gins, liqueurs and whiskey. A fantastic initiative!
