Millennium Knickerbocker or similar
Day 2 – Chicago
Today you will see Chicago from a unique perspective, on a Land and River Tour. This comprehensive tour visits the business district, the Loo and exclusive shopping areas and neighbourhoods. Then its all aboard for a shoreline cruise along the lakefront which allows you to view the Chicago river, bridges and the famous Chicago Locks.
Millennium Knickerbocker or similar
Day 3 – Lake Michigan
Pick up your motorhome in Chicago this morning and head east around the shores of Lake Michigan, out of Illinois and into Indiana. As you cross the state line, you will come to Gary, the birthplace of Michael Jackson. After a little exploration carry on to your RV park and spend this evening marvelling over the beauty of Lake Michigan.
Day 4 to 5 – Detroit
On the way to Detroit, the home of ‘Motown’, you’ll pass by Battle Creek which is where a certain Dr. Kellogg invented cold breakfasts. Whilst you’re in the area it’s worth visiting the Arctic Ring of Life at Detroit Zoo. At 4.2 acres, it’s the world’s largest polar bear exhibit and features the only Polar Passage, a 70 feet long clear tunnel in which visitors can get closer to diving and swimming polar bears and seals than anywhere else on earth.
Day 6 to 7 – Toronto
You can cross into Canada from the centre of Detroit by bridge or tunnel, or alternatively journey north to Port Huron to cross the border at the Blue Water Bridge, where Lake Huron drains into the St. Clair River.
You will pass through London and Cambridge to reach Toronto, home to the iconic CN Tower, until 2007 the world’s tallest freestanding structure.
Day 8 – Niagara Falls
Toronto may well be somewhere you’ll choose to extend your stay but, if you’re carrying on, you’re headed around Lake Ontario bound for Niagara Falls. Along the way, you should see the Welland Canal which links Lakes Erie and Ontario. Its eight locks raise ships and enable them to bypass the 173 feet high Niagara Falls.
Day 9 to 10 – Cleveland
Cross back into the United States and, passing Buffalo, take the interstate bound for Cleveland. This is another place where you may wish to extend your stay, but make a start with the startling I.M. Pei design for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, allow plenty of time to wallow in the soundtrack of your life.
Day 11 – Toledo
If you have children on board, or just if you are young at heart, do stop after 80 or so miles at Cedar Point Amusement Park, The Roller Coaster Capital of the World! There’s much more here, but the roller coasters attract visitors from every part of the world.
Day 12 – Chicago
Cross the state of Michigan today as you head back to Chicago. The journey should take around 4 hours but there are lots of photo opportunities along the route to help break up the drive.
Day 13 – Depart Chicago
Today marks the end of your Great Lakes motorhome holiday. Drop your motorhome off at the depot and make your way to the airport for your flight home.
