Pick up after an early breakfast at your hotel and drive up the beautiful and scenic Shimba Hills, climbing from an altitude of nearly 1,500 feet above sea level in a matter of half an hour. Shimba Hills National Reserve with its forests and hills is home to a varied animal species that reside in this beautiful reserve. Elephant, buffalo, sable antelope (Shimba is the only area in the whole of East Africa where this antelope is found), bushbuck, waterbuck, giraffe, spotted hyena, warthogs, baboon and over 200 bird species.

Lunch is served at Shimba Hills Tree Lodge, hidden in thick rainforest and overlooking a waterhole which is often visited by elephants and other animals coming down to drink.

After lunch take a walk on the wooden walkway that extends 120 metres into the tropical rainforest, at the end of which is a birdwatchers look-out. Leave the lodge again for a second game drive in the National Reserve, also visiting the two ‘viewpoints’ with their spectacular and breathtaking views of the coastline and its tiny islands south of Mombasa. Return to your Mombasa beach hotel in time for dinner.
