Hiring a Car in Malaysia
FREEDOM can arrange rental cars throughout Malaysia. Please find below an overview of the main terms and conditions of hire.
The Rental
On collection of your vehicle, you will be asked to sign the hire car company’s own terms and conditions of hire, making the rental subject to a direct contract between you and the car hire company. A credit card deposit will be taken to cover any additional costs, such as fuel, damage excess, road violations and optional services.
Please note, only physical Visa or Mastercard credit card transactions are accepted. Cash and debit cards will not be accepted.
Driver Qualifications
Drivers must be between 23 and 75 years old to drive a Hawk Rent a Car, or between 23 and 65 years old to drive an AVIS hire car.
All drivers must have held a valid driving licence for at least three years and hold a valid International Driving Permit (IDP). For details on how to obtain an IDP in the UK, please visit: https://www.gov.uk/driving-abroad/get-an-idp
Additional Drivers
Additional drivers must be registered at the time of booking and present on collection of the car. There is a charge of 10.60MYR per additional driver per day, payable at the car hire depot.
Child Safety Seats
Child safety seats are available to hire from MYR26.50 per day, up to a maximum of MYR243.80 per rental, payable at the car hire depot.
Minimum Hire & One Way Fees
All prices are per vehicle, based on a minimum hire of three days. A hire day consists of 24 hours from the arranged collection time. A fee will be charged for vehicles returned after the arranged hire period.
One way hire is only permitted on rentals of three or more days. A fee of 375MYR is charged for one way rentals between main car hire depots between Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Cars can be dropped off at other locations, subject to a different fee – please ask for details.
Delivery & Collection
Complimentary delivery/collection is available on rentals of three or more days to/from certain Kuala Lumpur and Penang hotels – please ask for details.
Route Restrictions
It is not permitted to drive the vehicle into Brunei, Singapore or Thailand.
Insurance & Excess
Comprehensive insurance for vehicle loss or damage and third party damage, is included in all rentals, subject to the following excess (regardless of fault):
- Group A and D hire cars – MYR1908
- Group G hire cars – MYR3180
In the event of an accident or theft, you must make a police report within 24 hours of the incident.
Please note, the hirer is responsible for full damage and any third party costs if the driver is found to have broken the law, been under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or been engaging in reckless behaviour. It is the driver’s responsibility to be aware of local driving laws.
Breakdown & Roadside Assistance
24 hour breakdown and roadside assistance is included in the hire. This covers both mechanical faults, and call-outs for flat batteries, flat tyres, miss-fuelling or locking the keys inside the vehicle.
Vehicle Model
Car types are subject to availability and the hire car company reserve the right to substitute any model with a similar model if necessary.
