2026 & 2027 Borneo Holidays
Our Borneo Travel Experts answer your most frequently asked questions about planning a holiday to Borneo.
Can you fly direct to Borneo from the UK?
Currently there are no direct flights to Borneo from the UK, so most visitors route via nearby Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Other South-East Asia hubs like Bangkok and Hong Kong also have good flight links to Borneo, making a range of stopovers possible to extend your Borneo holiday. Borneo has a number of connecting airports including Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Sandakan.
When is the best time of year to go on a Borneo Holiday?
Borneo’s dry season runs from March to October. With less rainfall wildlife viewing conditions are optimal and also better suited for relaxing on the beach. However, Borneo’s equatorial climate means that tropical showers are possible throughout the year. Borneo’s wettest months are typically between November and February, but wildlife can still be viewed during this period.
What wildlife can I expect to see on a Borneo holiday?
Borneo is renowned for its extraordinary wildlife, including orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, sun bears, and gibbons. The island is home to over 200 bird species, numerous reptiles, and incredible insect diversity. Marine life is equally impressive, with excellent opportunities for spotting sea turtles, tropical fish, and colourful coral reefs.
How long do I need for a Borneo holiday?
We recommend that about two weeks is ideal for exploring multiple Borneo regions, such as the Kinabatangan River, Danum Valley, and Kota Kinabalu, without feeling rushed. Longer stays do enable a deeper exploration of Borneo’s diverse landscapes and cultures, whilst seven to ten days still allows you to experience both the rainforest and the beach quite comfortably.
Is Borneo a good destination for families?
A carefully planned holiday to Borneo can make for a great family holiday. Wildlife encounters such as the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre can really captivate children and adults alike. Learning about sun bears, elephants and exotic birds is both fun and educational. Whilst many rainforest lodges welcome families, it is important to note that there can be age restrictions on certain jungle activities, so it is important to check with your travel consultant. Many of Borneo’s beach resorts provide child-friendly facilities and activities and the calm waters are good for water activities. Ask your Travel Consultant which resorts they would recommend for your family.
Is Borneo a good honeymoon destination?
Borneo provides a perfect honeymoon combination of adventure and romance, offering unique experiences beyond traditional beach destinations. Couples can share extraordinary wildlife encounters in luxurious rainforest settings before unwinding at a secluded beach resort or tropical island with spa facilities and stunning sunsets.
