Stay at Salt Lick Safari Lodge
One of Kenya’s most iconic properties, Salt Lick Safari Lodge is a collection of two story round houses, perched on stilts above the savannah, offering glorious views across the plains and of visiting wildlife below, drawn year round to the lodge’s permanent waterhole.
Elephant, zebra and buffalo sightings are relatively common, their presence sometimes attracting big cats. The terraced bar is a popular viewing platform, cold drink in hand, however those looking to get a little closer can follow an underground tunnel to a sunken hide by the waterhole, to watch the animals drinks and bathe, just metres away.
Where is Salt Lick Safari Lodge?
Salt Lick Safari Lodge is located in the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, a 113 square kilometre wildlife conservancy in South East Kenya. The lodge is around a 3 hour drive from Mombasa, or a 1 hour 25 minute train ride on the Madaraka Express to the town of Voi, followed by a scenic 45 minute transfer into the reserve.
Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary
The Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is home to over 50 species of large mammal, including elephant, cape buffalo, lion, leopard and cheetah, as well as more than 390 species of bird. The landscape is mainly savannah grassland punctuated by acacia trees, endlessly nibbled by giraffes!
The sanctuary lies within the Eastern Arc Mountain Range, which extends from Taita Hills over the border into Tanzania and towards Lake Malawi. Sitting at around 1,200 metres above sea level, mornings can be a little chilly, so do pack a coat!
Taiti Hills Sanctuary is near the border of Tsavo West National Park, which combined with Tsavo East, forms one of the largest wildlife reserves in the world, covering an area of 20,812 square kilometres.
You can enjoy game drives in both on our three day Tsavo Discovery safari, staying at Salt Lick Safari Lodge on the first night.
