Hiring a Hybrid Car in New Zealand

FREEDOM are pleased to partner with GO Rentals to offer hybrid car hire in New Zealand. Please find below an overview of the main terms and conditions of hire.

The Rental

On collection of your Go Rental vehicle, you will be asked to sign the hire car company’s own terms and conditions of hire, making the rental subject to a direct contract between you and the car hire company.

A credit card bond will be taken to cover any additional costs, such as damage excess, fuel and airport surcharges. This bond is removed if an ‘All-Inclusive‘ package is purchased.

Driver Qualifications

Drivers must be 21 years of age or older and have held a valid driving licence issued in English for at least one year. There is no upper age limit.

Additional Drivers

Additional drivers can be included free of charge. They must be present on collection of the vehicle.

Child Safety Seats

Child safety seats are compulsory in New Zealand. They are available to hire for $59 per childe seat per vehicle hire, or included free of charge in the ‘All-Inclusive‘ package. To ensure availability, child safety seats should be requested when you book your hire car.

Mileage & Minimum Hire

All car rentals include unlimited kilometres.

There is a minimum rental period of 3 days if collecting and returning the vehicle to the same depot, 5 days for single island one way hires, and 7 days for one way hires between the North and South Islands.

One Way Hire

One way hire is available with no additional fees.

Route Restrictions

Cars may only be driven on properly formed sealed, metalled or gravel roads.

Cars may not be driven on Skippers Road, Ball Hutt Road, Ninety Mile Beach, as well as some other remote unsealed roads.

Interislander Ferry

In most instances, hire cars can be taken on the Interislander Ferry. Space must be pre booked and purchased at the time of booking.

Location Fees

The following location fees apply:

Collection from Auckland or Christchurch Airports – $10
Collection and/or drop-off at Queenstown Airport – $20 per hire
Collection and/or drop-off at Waiheke – $10 per hire

The above fees are included in the ‘All-Inclusive‘ package.

Roadside Assistance

Mechanical breakdown assistance is included in your hire.

Roadside assistance for non-mechanical breakdowns is available for $3 per day per hire as part of a ‘Total Road Care’ package, which also covers toll fees and road user charges.

The ‘Total Road Care’ package itself is included in the ‘All-Inclusive‘ package.

Insurance

Standard insurance for vehicle loss or damage is included in all rentals. However, the renter is liable for the following excess, which will be held as a credit card bond:

Hybrid Crossover (Group 4H) – $4,000
Hybrid Intermediate AWD (Group 6H) – $4,000
Hybrid 4×4 (Group 7H) – $5,000

All-Inclusive Package

The above excess can be reduced to NIL by pre-purchasing an ‘All Inclusive’ package, which also includes:

Tyre and windscreen cover
Location fees
Airport transfers
After-hours pick-up and drop-off
Total Road Care package (including non-mechanical breakdown cover)
Toll roads

Please note, you are not covered for loss or damage to the vehicle caused by driver negligence or reckless driving, nor for overhead, underbody or water damage. Damage to tyres or windscreens is also not covered by standard insurance.
