California Motorhome Hire
Why choose a motorhome for exploring California?
A motorhome gives you unparalleled freedom to explore California’s natural wonders at your own pace. You can wake up in Yosemite Valley surrounded by granite cliffs, spend the afternoon driving the Pacific Coast Highway with the ocean as your backdrop, and camp under the stars in the desert, all with your accommodation travelling alongside you.
A motorhome is perfect for visiting National Parks where accommodation can be limited, and you’ll save money on hotels whilst having all your facilities on board. Plus, there’s something truly special about being able to stop wherever takes your fancy and simply enjoy the moment.
What is the best route for a California motorhome holiday?
There are many popular routes that combine parts of the Pacific Coast Highway with some of California’s National Parks. Many visitors start in San Francisco, head east to Yosemite, then work their way south through Sequoia and Kings Canyon before heading west to the coast. From there, you can drive down Highway 1 through Big Sur to Southern California. Alternatively, if you’re after desert landscapes, consider a route that includes Palm Springs, Joshua Tree National Park and Death Valley. The beauty of motorhome travel is that you can create your own route based on what interests you most, whether that’s beaches, mountains, forests, or deserts.
Can I visit all of California’s National Parks in a motorhome?
California has nine national parks: Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Redwood, Lassen Volcanic, Pinnacles, and Channel Islands. Eight of these are brilliantly set up for motorhome camping, with campgrounds that accommodate RVs, though size restrictions may apply in some areas. Most parks allow motorhomes up to 27-30 feet, with some sites accommodating larger vehicles. The exception is Channel Islands National Park, which is only accessible by boat or plane from the mainland.
The mainland parks offer a range of camping experiences. Many campgrounds provide hook-ups for water and electricity, whilst others offer a more rustic, back-to-nature experience. It’s worth noting that Yosemite’s campgrounds are incredibly popular and often book up six months in advance, so planning ahead is essential for the most sought-after parks.
Are motorhomes difficult to drive in California?
Most UK visitors find American motorhomes surprisingly easy to drive. They’re typically automatic, roads are wider than in the UK, and parking spaces are generally more generous. The main adjustment is driving on the right-hand side of the road. Whilst we don’t recommend driving motorhomes into the centre of a city, most of California’s roads are well maintained, well-signposted and traffic free. You will be shown around your motorhome before you depart so you will have time to get used to the vehicle size before you
