New York State Holidays 2024 & 2025
With iconic locations like Manhattan and Niagara Falls, you may think that you already know New York State. But there is so much more to explore. You could spend some time on Long Island relaxing on the expansive beaches of Fire Island or you may prefer to hike through the gorge at Watkins Glen in the Finger Lakes. The natural beauty of New York State is waiting to be discovered all over again.
When is the best time to visit New York State?
New York’s natural scenery is best explored between April and October, when days are longer and temperatures are milder.
Niagara Falls reaches peak flow in May and June, when the melting snow from the Great Lakes causes the water to rush dramatically over the falls.
For those wanting to see the stunning autumn colours in the Adirondacks, the best time is late September to early October, when the mountains turn a vibrant red, orange and yellow.
Visiting The Hamptons in July and August are perfect for sunbathing and swimming. These are the warmest months of the year, so ideal for making the most of Long Island’s relaxed way of life.
What are the best places to visit from New York City?
Head north from New York City and you’ll soon reach the Hudson Valley. Start with Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, where you can explore historic sites like Lyndhurst Mansion and the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
Continuing further, Bear Mountain State Park has some great hiking trails and beautiful views of the Hudson River. Cold Spring is a charming riverside town known for its antique shops and cafes, perfect for a day trip from the city.
Alternatively, you can head east from NYC to Long Island. Along its south coast, Fire Island offers a car-free, laid-back beach escape. To the north, sits Port Jefferson, a lovely village with an historic harbour and nearby county park with sand dunes to climb. Or you could visit the glamorous Hamptons, where you can enjoy beautiful beaches, high end boutiques, and farm-to-table dining.
Are Niagara Falls in New York?
Niagara Falls straddles the USA/Canada border, about 400 miles northwest of New York City. The American side of Niagara Falls is in New York State.
From New York State you can visit Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in the United States. Here, you’ll get close up views of American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls from Prospect Point and the 282 feet Observation Tower.
The famous Maid of the Mist boat tour is a must, taking you to the foot of the falls for an unforgettable experience. For those looking to get even closer, the Cave of the Winds tour lets you walk next to the Bridal Veil Falls and feel the powerful spray.
