David’s 2000 Mile American Road Trip

David travelling in a Winnebago, USA

Freedom Destination’s Managing Director, David, recently enjoyed a thrilling America motorhome adventure, travelling thousands of American miles. Here’s what he had to say about is road trippin’ experience.

Some opportunities are too good to miss and this was one of them. Our American motorhome provider had some new RVs to be picked up from the factory and perhaps someone at Freedom would do it for them.

You bet! That was the start of my 2,000 mile adventure across America. Four weeks later, I set off with a good friend for a road trip of a lifetime.

First stop was Minneapolis, close to the Great Lakes and a scarily long way from our final destination of Los Angeles. And there we saw it, our 31 foot family Winnebago, with air conditioning, generator, full kitchen, a huge bedroom, pop-out sides and only 11 miles on the clock. After some straightforward instructions on the knobs and dials, we were on the road.

That’s when we found out how big America was. Heading south through the open farm country of Idaho, we drove two hours to find a Walmart for our essential supplies. Fresh meat, veg, pasta and sauces – with a full size oven and fridge freezer on board, we were not going to starve.

After our first night at a welcoming RV park, we headed west. If we had thought Idaho was big, Nebraska took it to an entirely new level. Mile after mile of corn fields, dotted with tree sheltered homesteads – the great mid west seemed to go on forever.

As we crossed into Colorado, the land seemed to rise and our interstate highway flew over Denver, now a modern and vibrant city. Then the climb got serious and our road cut through the Rocky Mountains, where snow still laid beside the road and ski resorts lined the valleys.

It was now time to head south towards the amazing rock formations of Monument Valley we had seen in so many cowboy movies. On the way, a stop at the lively resort town of Moab delighted us. Squeezed between Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, the area is hugely popular with America holidaymakers and campers.

Here, we started to see some real American motorhomes, which made our 31 footer look small. Great bus-like vehicles, some hitched to the back of monster pick-up trucks and many with cars in tow.

Later we hit the Navajo Nation with its starkly beautiful scenery and home to over 300,000 native Americans. No time for souvenirs, though, as our destination that day was the Grand Canyon – and it did not disappoint. Peering over the edge of this vast layered gorge is simply awesome and there are different views from every lookout.

So, natural wonder ticked, it was on to historic Williams on the old Route 66, before driving through the desert to that oasis of neon, Las Vegas. One massive casino would have impressed, but a strip full of them, was just incredible!

Suffering from a serious late night and several dollars poorer, we began our final leg to Los Angeles and the Pacific coast. Our final bout of sightseeing took us to Long Beach, Hollywood, Santa Barbara, Griffith Park, Rodeo Drive and more, before our overnight flight back to the UK – exhausted but elated by our 2,000 mile American motorhome adventure.
