Mekong River Cruises 2025 & 2026
Embark on an immersive journey through the heart of South East Asia, where each bend of the river reveals a new marvel waiting to be explored.
The Location of the Mekong River
The mighty Mekong River is one of the world’s great waterways, carving a path through South East Asia. It has a significant ecological, cultural and economic impact on the communities it flows through, playing a key role in daily life.
Originating in China’s Tibetan Plateau, the Mekong River is over 4,000 kilometres long, and it travels through six countries (China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam) before it reaches the South China Sea.
Mekong River cruises leave from several locations. If you’re looking to cruise from Cambodia, ships typically depart from Siem Reap, or you can start at the mouth of the river, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. For shorter cruises in Laos, you can cruise from Huay Xai on the Thai border.
What can I see on a Mekong River Cruise?
Here are some of the main highlights to expect along the Mekong River in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos:
- Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam – The bustling metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City, where the Mekong River Delta begins. Explore vibrant markets, colonial architecture, and rich cultural heritage.
- Cai Be Floating Market, Vietnam – Discover the colours and flavours of Cai Be Floating Market, where local traders gather to sell fresh produce, handicrafts, and more from their boats, offering a glimpse into the traditional way of life along the Mekong.
- Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Delve into Cambodia’s history and culture with a stop in Phnom Penh. Visit the Royal Palace, the poignant Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, and the awe-inspiring Silver Pagoda.
- Angkor Wat, Cambodia – While not directly on the Mekong River, most cruises offer excursions to the iconic Angkor Wat temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most magnificent architectural wonders in the world.
- Kampong Cham, Cambodia – Explore the charming town of Kampong Cham, known for its French colonial architecture and the serene Wat Nokor temple complex.
- Luang Prabang, Laos If you’d prefer to take a shorter Laos Mekong Cruise, you’ll end your journey in the tranquil town of Luang Prabang, where time seems to stand still among its ancient temples, lush landscapes, and buzzing night markets.
What is the best time to do a Mekong River Cruise?
- November to February – This is the high season thanks to its cool, dry weather. You can expect clear skies, lush countryside scenery and cities like Ho Chi Minh and Phnom Penh are bustling, making it an ideal time for a Mekong River cruise.
- March to May – As its shoulder season, ships will be quieter and you can often get great deals. It is very hot during the day, but historic sites are less crowded and cruises feel intimate and serene.
- June to October – For Vietnam and Cambodia, this it wet season, but there are advantages at this time of year. As the rivers get wider you can explore more remote areas, including Cambodia’s Tonle Sap, and there are much fewer tourists.
For peak season Mekong River cruises, we’d recommend booking six to eight months in advance, and around four or five months in advance for off-season cruises.
