Getting Around

A compact city with well laid out streets, walking around Adelaide is easy. There are buses if you need them and a modern tram connects to the lively beachside district of Glenelg. Day tours to Kangaroo Island, local vineyards and even a Murray River cruise can be arranged by our Australia experts before you go.

Guide to South Australia

Most of South Australia’s population centres around Adelaide in the south of the state, where the weather is more moderate and the soils more fertile. Here vineyards and fruit orchards stretch for miles and there are plenty of country and coastal towns to explore.

  • Discover the scenery and wildlife of Kangaroo Island
  • Go wine tasting in the Barossa, Clare Valley or McLaren Vale wine regions
  • Bushwalk through the rugged Flinders Ranges
  • Discover the wetlands and lagoons of the Coorong National Park
  • Ride a horse drawn tram or go on a dolphin spotting cruise in Victor Harbor
  • Visit the old German settlement of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills
  • Cruise the Murray River on an old paddle wheeler
  • Explore the rolling green hills and beaches of the Fleurieu Peninsula
  • Experience the red dunes and pink salt lakes of the outback
  • Search for opals in Coober Pedy
  • Walk the forests and vineyards of the Adelaide Hills

By Road – Adelaide is 500 miles from Melbourne along the Great Ocean Road and 1670 miles from west coast Perth.

By Rail – South Australia is at the hub of Australia’s great rail routes. You can journey to Perth or Sydney on the Indian Pacific or head north to Alice Springs or Darwin aboard the legendary Ghan. There are also daily services to Melbourne.

By Air – We highly recommend popular rail and road connections to Adelaide but if you are short on time, our Australia Experts will arrange internal flights to and from other Australian cities as part of your tailor-made Adelaide holiday.
