The Ghan Train
A journey aboard The Ghan is a rail adventure like no other. Travelling in elegance and comfort, you’ll explore the remote heart of Australia, experiencing the vast landscapes that are otherwise difficult to reach.
What is The Ghan train’s route?
Renowned as one of Australia’s most beautiful train journeys, the Ghan travels through the centre of Australia. You can embark on this incredible journey from Darwin or Adelaide, either travelling between them, or ending your journey at Alice Springs. Alternatively, choose to begin your Ghan route at Alice Springs, travelling either north to Darwin or south to Adelaide.
Although the Ghan does not stop directly at Uluru, you can disembark The Ghan train at Alice Springs, known as the gateway to the Red Centre. From Alice Springs, you can reach Uluru by road, air, or opt for a guided tour of Uluru, with transfers included. If you’re looking for inspiration, our Rock & Rail or Icons of the Outback itineraries incorporate both a journey on The Ghan train, and a visit to Uluru, or get in touch with our Australia Experts to create your perfect holiday.
How long does it take to ride The Ghan?
It takes just two days to get between Adelaide and Alice Springs, and Alice Springs and Darwin, meaning you’ll stay on The Ghan overnight. If you’d like to take the journey between Adelaide and Darwin, you will spend three days, two nights on board.
The Ghan Expedition last 4 days and offers an all-inclusive rail adventure. Explore Katherine, Alice Springs and Coober Pedy with unique off-train experiences and an extraordinary dinner under the stars at the historic Telegraph Station in Alice Springs.
What is the best time of year to travel on The Ghan?
The Ghan does not run all year round, operating from March to November inclusive. As the scorching summer arrives in the Outback, The Ghan takes a seasonal break, operating the Great Southern instead, that travels between Adelaide and Brisbane.
Whilst there is no bad time to travel on The Ghan, May to August makes a great time to explore central Australia as the desert isn’t quite as hot.
