The Great Southern is still relatively new and lesser known that its iconic counterparts, departing from Adelaide for the first time in December 2019. Introduced by the creators of the famous Ghan and Indian Pacific trains, it offers the same impeccable service and outstanding onboard cuisine that travellers have come to expect.
What is the route of the Great Southern train?
The Great Southern travels from Adelaide to Brisbane (or vice versa) via Canberra, with several stops along the way. The Great Southern is also launching a new route this year, now offering a slightly shorter journey from Brisbane to Melbourne.
A journey aboard the Great Southern allows you to explore some of Australia’s most spectacular landscapes, passing through South Australia, Victoria the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales, as well as beginning or ending your journey in South Queensland.
How long is the Great Southern train trip?
The 3 day Great Southern rail journey from Adelaide to Brisbane stops in the mountainous Grampian National Park for an unforgettable outdoor dining experience and Canberra where you can chose a gallery or museum tour.
The 4 day Great Southern rail journey from Brisbane to Adelaide offers a choice of excursions; the Hunter Valley wine region, Port Stephens or Newcastle on day two and Melbourne or the Great Ocean Road on Day three.
When does the Great Southern train operate?
The Great Southern train runs at opposite times to the iconic Ghan, offering a similarly spectacular rail journey when it is too hot to travel through the Outback. The Great Southern operates between December and February, with weekly departures.
What are the cabins like on the Great Southern train?
Gold Twin Cabins
Gold Twin Cabins are sleek and modern, with a comfortable seating seating area that converts into bunks, and an en-suite bathroom.
Gold Single Cabins
Gold Single Cabins offer a spacious seating area during the day, that is converted into a bed each night. Modern shower and toilet facilities are found at the end of the carriage, but each cabin is equipped with its own basin.
Gold Premium
You can upgrade your Gold Twin Cabin or Gold Suite to Premium, providing you with exclusive access to the Gold Premium Lounge and the Gold Premium Dining carriage and preferences on off-train experiences.
Platinum Suites
Platinum Suites offer a luxurious experience, with windows on both sides of the carriage, a spacious seating area and an en-suite bathroom. You can opt for either twin beds or a double, and platinum travellers get additional luggage allowance, access to the Platinum Club, first choice of off-train experiences and more.
Is there a dress code on the Great Southern train?
There is no strict dress code on board the Great Southern train, as comfort is the priority. Smart casual attire is recommended however, and ensure you have suitable clothing for the off-train experiences.
What is included on the Great Southern train?
Included in your ticket aboard the Great Southern are a variety of off-train experiences. Just some of the experiences on offer are dining under the stars in Coffs Harbour, a wine tour in Hunter Valley, a boat cruise in Port Stephens, a tour of Melbourne Cricket Ground and a visit to Parliament House.
You will also receive all of your meals, with dishes inspired by the season and the regions that you’re passing through. You can also enjoy a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages
