The diverse landscapes of New Zealand provided the perfect foundation for creation of Pandora, the Earth-like habitable extrasolar moon in Avatar. Most filming took place in and around Wellington in the North Island.

Australia was filmed in several locations in the Northern Territory, with Hugh Jackman driving Lady Sarah’s cattle from fictional Faraway Downs to market in Darwin. The rugged Kimberley region, in Western Australia, and coastal town of Bowen, in Queensland, also feature.
Unforgiven was filmed at The Ranch at Fisher Creek, to the southwest of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. From here, snow-capped peaks and turquoise lakes of Banff National Park are only about 1.5 hours away.
Unfortunately, the influx of tourists to Maya Bay, in Phi Phi Leh, after the film’s release had a damaging effect on the environment. The area was closed in 2018 to let the coral reef recover. It has now been re-opened, but with visitor numbers limited. There are many equally beautiful alternatives around the Phi Phi Isles!
The sweeping plains of the Maasai Mara and dramatic cliffs of Ol Njorowa Gorge in Hell’s Gate National Park helped shape the scenery and storyline of this beloved animated classic.
